Turns out that launching in three new cities isn't the only 5G news from Verizon today, because the carrier has also published coverage maps for its 5G network for the first time.
Verizon now offers coverage maps for all 18 cities where its 5G network is currently live. Spotted by PCMag, Verizon will let you choose one of its 5G cities and then show you the landmarks and neighborhoods where 5G is available. From there, you can zoom in closer and get a better idea of exactly where coverage is live.
For example, below is Verizon's 5G coverage map for the "Downtown West" portion of Minneapolis, MN. The darker red is where Verizon 5G is available, while the pink is 4G LTE.
Below is another example of Verizon's 5G coverage maps, showing you some of the places where the network is available in Chicago.
And then there's the coverage in Sioux Falls, SD, which just launched today and isn't quite as broad as in some other cities.
Verizon first launched its wireless 5G network at the start of April 2019, and so while it took the carrier seven months, it's good to see Verizon finally publish 5G coverage maps for their customers. The network is still young and using mmWave spectrum, which offers fast speeds but doesn't have a great reach. If you're the early adopter type who's been thinking about buying one of Verizon's four 5G-capable smartphones, though, at least now you've got a better idea of exactly where you'll be able to get those 5G speeds.
