We're still waiting for the Galaxy Fold to launch — though that could finally happen soon — but now details about Samsung's next foldable smartphone are coming out.
Samsung is reportedly working on a new foldable with a 6.7-inch inner display that, when folded, resembles a clamshell-style flip phone in the shape of a "pocketable square". This means that when it's opened, this new device will be closer to a regular smartphone than the Galaxy Fold, which has a squarer display when opened. This means that Android apps shouldn't need to be adapted to a different screen shape to take full advantage of the screen like on the Galaxy Fold.
It's said that Samsung is testing Ultra Thin Glass for the inner display on this new foldable. This glass measures just 3% of the thickness of the glass normally used for smartphone screens, notes Bloomberg.
Samsung's new foldable device is also expected to have a hole-punch selfie camera at the top of the inner display, similar to the Note 10, along with outer cameras that'll face the rear when the phone is open or the front when it's folded closed.
This new foldable is currently slated to debut in early 2020 at a more affordable price than the $1,980 Galaxy Fold, but it's possible that its fate will depend on how well the Galaxy Fold performs after its launch.
We've seen foldable device designs from a handful of different companies so far, but most of them unfold to reveal a large square display. This upcoming Samsung foldable is more like the rumored Motorola RAZR foldable that resembles a flip phone when closed and gives you a tall screen when opened. That may not be quite the same as unfolding a big tablet, but it could give you a tall, more traditional smartphone-style screen that would be compact in your pocket, and regular smartphone apps may not need much work to look good on those screens.
