U.S. carriers continue to reach milestones on their path to rolling out wireless 5G coverage, and this week Verizon completed another such milestone.
Verizon says that it's completed the world's first 5G data transmission on a smartphone on a commercial 3GPP 5G NR (New Radio) network. To complete the test, Verizon used a Moto Z3 with a 5G Moto Mod attached. The test was completed in Providence, RI using Verizon's 28GHz spectrum.
During the testing, Verizon, Qualcomm, Samsung, and Motorola all teamed up to browse the web and make a video call over a 5G connection. The testing included Samsung 5G NR solutions, Motorola's Moto Z3 and 5G Moto Mod, and Qualcomm's Snapdragon X50 5G modem in the Moto Mod as well as the QTM052 mmWave antenna modules.
The Moto Z3 and its 5G Moto Mod were announced earlier this year. You can buy the Moto Z3 from Verizon right now, and the 5G Moto Mod is expected to launch next year. In addition to adding 5G connectivity to the Moto Z3 and previous Moto Z phones, the 5G Moto Mod includes a 2000mAh battery to help keep the 5G data flowing.
Verizon says it's 5G mobile network will launch in 2019.
