e’ve seen a lot of Facebook apps come and go, with apps like Facebook Camera and Facebook Paper offering new ways to use Facebook but ultimately getting pulled. Now Facebook has another new app that it’s hoping will catch on.
Lifestage is a new app from Facebook that’s all about videos. The app tasks you with taking short videos to create a profile. For example, it’ll ask to see your happy face, your best friend, the way you dance, and your likes. The app will show you bio questions that you can answer, and as you answer them, more will become unlocked.
To drive home the focus on video, the Lifestage app opens your phone’s camera on launch.
The catch here is that not everyone will be able to use Lifestage. The app can only be used by people that are 21 or under. If you’re 22 or up, you’ll only be able to see your own profile.
If you’re young enough to sign up, you’ll be able to see the profiles of other people from your school that’ve signed up and those nearby. You’ll only see other people once 20 people from your school sign up, though.
Lifestage is now available for download, but it’s currently only available to iPhone users in the U.S.
Lifestage is an interesting app because it takes the existing Facebook formula, but adapts it for video, which is a heavy focus on the web nowadays. The app is also intriguing because of the barriers to fully using it, but I’m betting that Facebook won’t have any problems getting the app to go viral so that kids at various schools can use it to view others’ profiles.
