Sprint has gone back and forth on two-year contracts, killing them then bringing them back, and now it looks like they’re ready to kill the contract again later this month.
According to an internal Sprint memo leaked to Phone Arena and a Sprint assistant store manager on Reddit, Sprint stores will stop offering phone contracts on August 26. This means that new customers and those looking to upgrade will have to buy their device on a monthly installment or lease if they’re buying in a Sprint store.
One thing to note is that current Sprint customers that really want a two-year contract with a new phone will be able to get one through Sprint.com or through Sprint’s telesales.
Tablets and mobile broadband devices will still be available on-contract for new customers and upgrades.
It’s not terribly surprising to learn that Sprint is going to kill phone subsidies in its stores. As the leaked memo mentions, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile have all stopped offering contracts to new customers, and only Verizon still offers them to upgraders. Of course, Sprint will still offer contracts online and through telesales if you really want one. It’s also possible that Sprint could just change its mind and bring contacts back again.
