Remember back in May when Google proposed new emoji to improve the diversification of the characters? Well today most of them have been approved by the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee, which is in charge of the development of emoji.
Of the 13 emoji proposed by Google, 11 were approved by Unicode. The new emoji include professions for both women and men in all skin colors. There’s a rockstar, a teacher, a computer developer, a scientist, a farmer, and more. With all of the different combinations available, Google says that more than 100 new emoji will be available.
In addition to the 11 new emoji, Unicode has agreed to add male and female versions of 33 existing emoji. For example, there will be a female runner emoji and a male haircut emoji.
Expect to see these emoji in future versions of Android, iOS, and other platforms. Emoji have become a pretty big deal in mobile, and so having more emoji options is a big deal, especially when it comes to expanding diversity and offering more male and female options of the characters.
