There’s certainly no shortage of weather apps available on Android, but if you’ve ever found wanting more info than the basic 7-day forecast, there’s a new app that you should check out.
Dark Sky, a popular weather app that’s been on iOS for a while now, launched on Android today. Dark Sky is known for its hyperlocal weather info that’ll give you details on the weather exactly where you are, as well as its down-to-the-minute rain forecasts. Both features are available with Dark Sky for Android, as are all of the other iOS app features.
Included in Dark Sky for Android are detailed 24-hour and 7-day forecasts, radar, and customizable weather notifications. There are also a couple of features exclusive to the Android version of Dark Sky. The first one is widget support, which will let you slap a Dark Sky widget on your home screen that’ll show you the rain forecast for the next hour, today’s weather info, or a 7-day forecast.
The other Android-exclusive feature relates to its pricing. Dark Sky costs $3.99 on iOS, but on Android it’s a free download with a premium in-app purchase. The base app is free and offers current weather conditions, 24-hour and 7-day forecasts, and weather maps. If you pony up the $2.99 per year for Dark Sky Premium, though, you can also get the down-to-the-minute rain forecasts, customizable notifications, and widgets. Dark Sky is also offering a two-week free trial of its premium features so that you can try them before buying.
I’ve been using Dark Sky on iOS for a while now, and so it’s great to see the app finally arrive on Android. The Android app looks largely similar to its iOS counterpart, with tabs at the bottom of the display to let you jump between the app’s different sections. Everything about the app seems to work smoothly, and while I haven’t yet had the chance to try its notifications because the app was just released, but The Dark Sky Company has been a solid developer in the past, and so I’d expect weather notifications to work well, too.
If you’re interested in adding a new weather app to your life, give Dark Sky a try.
