With the sales numbers of phones like the iPhone 6s, the Galaxy S7, or any number of other high-end devices out there, it’s safe to say that we spend a lot of money on really expensive phones. Devices made of glass and metal, we fork over quite a bit of money, sometimes all at once and oftentimes over a period of months — to be able to call one of these flagship devices our own for how ever long we have them.

And in the best case scenario, for most, that means much longer than a year of smartphone bliss. And let’s face it, in most cases, and not including the folks that just want a new phone every year (or sooner), that smartphone is meant to last a lot longer than just a year.

But sometimes life just gets in the way, right?

Every day that I get in my car, I pull my phone out of my pocket and set it down in my lap. After I get all buckled up I make sure the phone’s connected to my car, so that I can listen to music while driving, and then I go about my business. More often than not this never causes any issues, and the phone just sits idly by until I park and get out.

I’d be lying if there haven’t been a few occasions when I’ve completely forgotten about the phone in my lap, for whatever reason, and just opened the car door and stepped out. It’s pretty incredible to watch something like your smartphone, the device that keeps you connected to people, has all your important information on it, and, well, costs so much money, go skipping across a parking lot.

Out of the many times that has happened, I’ve been lucky. A few scrapes on the side of the device, but I’ve never had a phone break because of it. And no shattered displays, either. I’m not sure how I’ve gotten so lucky, considering I never put a case on my phone, but it’s been a pretty great streak so far.

Knock on wood, right?

Last year, though, I got out of my car, phone firmly in my hand, and then while I was walking up to a friend’s house I put the phone back in my pocket. Just a few moments later it started ringing, so I reached in and pulled it out. But apparently while I was doing that the edge of the phone caught the side of my pocket, and so it went tumbling out of my grip. I watched as it landed on the concrete sidewalk and then bounced into the grass.

I’ll be honest: I went for the phone not expecting anything at all. Like I’d pick it up, blow it off like that matters at all, and then just answer the call that I initially meant to answer. Nothing would be worse for wear. But oh, that was definitely not the case, and that was my first phone that I can legitimately recall breaking. I made it from 2006 to 2015 without seriously damaging a handset, and just like that the streak ended.

I’m curious to know what’s the shortest amount of time you’ve spent with a new smartphone. I want to know about the time you bought a new phone, or had one given to you, and then, if you were unlucky enough, how long it took before it was broken, and what happened to break it.
