Apple has been offering an iPhone trade-in program for a while now, but according to a new rumor, it’ll soon be improved.
According to 9to5Mac, Apple will begin taking iPhones with damaged screens, cameras, and buttons for trade-in this week. The report says that Apple will accept phones that are damaged “within reason,” so it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to chuck your phone off the top of a building and then trade it into Apple. It’s said that current trade-in values for broken iPhones are $50 for an iPhone 5s, $200 for an iPhone 6, and $250 for an iPhone 6 Plus.
While unconfirmed for now, it’d be smart for Apple to begin taking broken iPhone hardware for trade-in. Doing so could push owners of broken iPhones to trade in their device for a new model rather than taking it to a repair shop or simply living with the broken device. It would also ensure that these people stay in the iOS ecosystem rather than move to a different platform later on.
In addition to this updated trade-in program, it’s said that Apple will begin offering official screen protector installation in its stores. Apple has reportedly partnered with Belkin to put screen protector installation machines into Apple Stores. Previously, Apple didn’t allow its employees to install screen protectors because of the chance of error, but with these new machines, Apple is expected to be cool with in-store screen protector installs and will even give you a free protector if their machine messes up.
Screen protector installs are said to be offered in some Apple Stores today, with a larger rollout allegedly happening in the coming weeks.
