When the Amazon Echo first debuted in late 2014, it was kind of a strange product that was unexpected and kind of interesting, but also had a somewhat limited feature set. Since then, though, Amazon has beefed up the Echo with the ability to control smart home accessories like Philips Hue bulbs and local search with Yelp. Today Amazon is adding another big feature to the Echo’s repertoire.

Spotify Premium subscribers can now play music directly on the Amazon Echo. All that you have to do is ask Alexa to play an music from Spotify, like a playlist or artist, and enjoy. Today’s update means that you can use Spotify Connect with the Echo, which lets you quickly transfer your playback from the Spotify app to the Echo.

Because the Amazon Echo can function as a basic Bluetooth speaker, you’ve been able to play Spotify on the device since its launch. What’s notable about today’s launch is that it enables you to play Spotify tunes on the Echo without having to pair your phone or tablet over Bluetooth first. The one bit of news that may be disappointing to some is that you’ll need to be a Spotify Premium subscriber to get access to this functionality. A Spotify Premium subscription costs $9.99 per month, but if you’ve got an Echo and are interested in trying this new feature out, you can try Spotify Premium free for 30 days.
