The Snapdragon 820 is Qualcomm’s new flagship processor for 2016, and it’s probably going to appear in quite a few devices this year. Qualcomm has already detailed many of the SD820’s features, but today one other interesting tidbit about the chip was revealed.
Samsung said today that it will be behind the mass production of the Snapdragon 820. Samsung will use a 14nm process to produce the chips, which is the same one that’s being used in its latest Exynos 8 Octa processor.
It sounds kind of strange that Samsung would be making processors for Qualcomm, one of its biggest rivals, but it’s not totally unheard of for one company to tap another to help it make parts for a device. For example, Samsung helps to produce Apple’s A9 processor, which is found in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.
Earlier this month, the LeTV Le Max Pro was revealed as the first Snapdragon 820 smartphone. We’re sure to see many more debut in the coming months, though, including the Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG G5, both of which are rumored to include Qualcomm’s new chipset.
