Following a leak yesterday that suggested that Sprint had killed off contracts, Sprint today confirmed the news.
Sprint says that starting today, January 8, it’s no longer offering two-year contracts on phones. “The majority of our customers choose Sprint Lease or Sprint Easy Pay to obtain their new handset,” Sprint told Phonescoop. “These two options give customers the best value on their monthly rate plan.”
As of today, all four major US carriers have ceased offering new two-year contracts. T-Mobile and Verizon killed contracts previously, and both Sprint and AT&T are ending them today. That’s big because just a few years ago, most wireless consumers in the US bought their phones on contracts. Now most folks will likely move to installment plans,
Sprint also revealed today that it has added 36 countries and destinations to Sprint Open World and Sprint Global Roaming. Sprint Open World offers free unlimited talk and text and 1GB of high-speed data in Mexico, Canada, and several Latin American countries, as well as texting, discounted calling, and $30/GB high-speed data in locations outside Mexico, Canada, and Latin America. Meanwhile, Sprint Global Roaming is an add-on that offers unlimited 2G data and text, as well as $0.20 per minute calling to many international locales.
