It looks like the rumors are true: Pepsi today confirmed that it will launch an Android phone. Pepsi won’t be making the phones itself, though, opting instead to license its brand to another company that’ll make Pepsi-branding phones and accessories. Pepsi says that it has no plans to get into the manufacturing business.
When it comes to the details of its upcoming mobile products, Pepsi remained tight-lipped. Recent rumors have suggested that the “Pepsi P1” will run Android 5.1 on a 5.5-inch 1920x1080 display and offer 13-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front cameras, a MediaTek MT6592 processor, 16GB of storage, 2GB of RAM, and a 3000mAh battery. The one detail that Pepsi did confirm? That its phone and accessories will be sold in China.

The notion of a Pepsi smartphone sounds bizarre, but hey, it’s one way to advertise a product that we don’t see much of from non-mobile companies. While the design of the Pepsi phone hasn’t yet been confirmed, if the device has a Pepsi logo on its body, that’s a walking Pepsi advertisement that a person could end up carrying around for quite a while. And if the Pepsi phone’s rumored price of 1299 CNY ($205 USD) holds true, it could be attractive to folks looking for an affordable Android smartphone.
A post on the PepsiCo China account on Sina Weibo appears to mention that the company will make an announcement next Tuesday, so perhaps we’ll learn more about Pepsi’s smartphone soon.
