Apple typically offers SIM-free versions of its iPhone hardware, but sometimes those models can take a couple of months to go on sale after the new iPhone’s initial launch. With the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, though, it’s taken just shy of two weeks.
Apple is now selling SIM-free versions of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus in it online store. Pricing for the SIM-free phones is set at $649, $749, and $849 for the 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB iPhone 6s models and $749, $849, and $949 for the 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB iPhone 6s Plus.
The SIM-free iPhone 6s is model A1633 and the iPhone 6s Plus is A1634, which is the you’d get if you were buying an AT&T iPhone. The models for Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon are the A1688 and A1687 for the 6s and 6s Plus, respectively. The A1633/A1634 and the A1688/A1687 support largely the same LTE networks, though the A1633/A1634 has one LTE band (band 30) that the A1688/A1687 doesn’t.
As Apple notes, the SIM-free versions of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus doesn’t have any kind of contract, carrier financing, or SIM card. Since it comes unlocked out of the box, you can get a nano-SIM from any carrier, pop it into the phone, and be good to go.
Since the SIM-free iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus don’t come with any carrier financing options, it won’t be cheap to go totally carrier-free. You’ll also have to wait some time for a phone, as most models won’t be delivered until late October at the earliest. Still, if you’re determined to live the carrier-free life, you’ve now got the option.
