Because Verizon runs a CDMA network, its customers have typically only been able to use phones sold by Verizon itself. That’s changing now, though, as the big red carrier is allowing select non-Verizon phones onto its service.
Verizon's website now allows consumers to see if their device will work on its network. The carrier has confirmed that both the iPhone 6 and Nexus 6 are eligible to be used on its service, even if they weren’t bought from Verizon, so long as they’re unlocked before being activated on Verizon. That's because those unlocked devices include support for Verizon's CDMA and LTE network.
To see if your device can be activated on Verizon, you simple navigate to this page, select your device’s operating system, and then enter your IMEI. If the phone can be used on Verizon’s network, you’ll then enter your SIM ID number or buy a new SIM from Verizon. I tested the page by entering the IMEI of my unlocked iPhone 6 Plus and was told that it could be used on Verizon.
Verizon has been considered a pretty locked down carrier in the past, but it’s been opening up a bit more lately. Most Verizon phones are now sold unlocked, allowing you to easily pop in an international SIM when you’re overseas so that you can use a local carrier’s service rather than paying for an international plan from Verizon. Now the carrier is allowing select unlocked phones onto its service, too. While only select unlocked phones can be brought onto Verizon because of its CDMA coverage, this is still a welcome sight, and it makes Verizon a viable option if you’ve got an unlocked iPhone 6 or Nexus 6 and are considering switching to Big Red.
