There was a big kerfuffle involved the Nexus 7 (2013) and its launch on Verizon, with Google saying at the device’s launch in July 2013 that it’d work on Verizon, then Verizon saying that the N7 hadn’t been certified for use on its network. The Nexus 7 finally launched on Verizon in February, and if you ended up getting that model, you’ll be glad to know that you’ve got a big update headed your way.

Verizon says that its LTE Nexus 7 is now receiving an update (build LMY48L) that includes Android 5.1.1 and several other goodies that come with Lollipop. Those include a refreshed material design, a new Recent Apps screen, support for multiple users, and more. Also included in the update is support for Verizon’s XLTE service, which promises faster peak data speeds than its standard LTE network, and some “Android security patches,” which likely means a patch for the Stagefright exploit.

This is a huge update for the LTE Nexus 7 on Verizon. Not only does it bring the device up to the latest publicly available version of Android, but it allows the N7 to access Verizon’s XLTE service and also patches Stagefright, a vulnerability that’s been getting a lot of press lately. So if you’ve got an LTE Nexus 7 running on Verizon’s network, head into Settings > About tablet > System updates and see if you can grab it now.
