BlackBerry today reported its financial results for the first quarter of its fiscal 2016, which includes the three-month period ending on May 30.
During Q1 2016, BlackBerry sold 1.1 million smartphones, with an average selling price of $240. To compare, BlackBerry moved around 1.6 million phones in Q4 FY15 and 2.6 million phones in Q1 FY15.
Meanwhile, BlackBerry says that its software and technology licensing revenue grew a full 150 percent from Q1FY15, finishing the quarter at $137 million.
BlackBerry’s total revenue for Q1 FY16 was $658 million. That breaks down into 40 percent hardware, 38 percent services, and 21 percent software and technology licensing. The smartphone maker’s total loss for the first quarter was $28 million.
Obviously BlackBerry’s hardware side didn’t exactly do swimmingly during Q1 FY16, but its software division saw some notable growth. And despite the fact that its hardware business isn’t seeing explosive growth, BlackBerry is still plowing ahead with its hardware plans, with CEO John Chen teasing expanded Leap availability and that the other smartphone shown at MWC will come later in 2015. Chen also teased an upcoming Passport promotion with T-Mobile.
