Remember last week when a report claimed that ASUS is considering a purchase of HTC? Well today HTC officially responded to the rumor, and the company wants you to know that it’s not happening.
In a statement on its investor website, HTC today said that it strongly denies the rumors of an ASUS acquisition of HTC, saying that it hasn’t contacted ASUS and that it “will not consider an acquisition.” Cher Wang and Co. go on to say that it will continue to create “world-class innovative smart devices.” The full statement is as follows:
“We strongly deny the news. We didn’t contact Asusteck and will not consider the acquisition. As an international brand, HTC will continue to design world-class innovative smart devices through its pursuit of brilliance brand promise.”
The original rumor never claimed that ASUS had actually approached HTC about a possible deal, saying only that ASUS Chairman Johnny Shih has discussed the topic within his company. HTC’s statement certainly suggests that it’s not interested in any kind of acquisition, although even if it were considering a deal, it’s unlikely that HTC would just say, “Yeah, we’d be open to being acquired.” With both ASUS saying that the odds of an acquisition are “not big” and HTC’s strongly-worded denial, though, it looks like we can put rumors of an ASUS-HTC deal to bed for now.
