After Motorola confirmed in April that the original Moto X would go from Android 4.4.4 to Android 5.1, owners of the OG X have been patiently awaiting their Lollipop update. Now a Motorola exec has said that their wait should be over soon.
Motorola’s David Schuster says that the Moto X (1st Gen.)’s Android 5.1 update is currently undergoing soak testing in France and Germany, and that testing in the US and Brazil should begin this week. If all goes well, the full rollout should begin next week.
Schuster also touched on the Lollipop update plans for the carrier versions of the Moto X (1st Gen.) He explained that Motorola is in testing in “a number of carrier labs,” but that as is usually the case with updates for carrier-branded phones, testing for those devices typically take longer than unlocked phones.
Since the Moto X (1st Gen.) is jumping all the way from Android 4.4.4 to 5.1, owners of the original X are going to have a number of goodies to play with when they finally do get their Lollipop update, including a more Material Design user interface and performance improvements. So while it’s kind of a bummer that the Moto X (1st Gen.)’s Lollipop update is taking this long, the wait will be worth it when it finally begins rolling out.
