Google today announced Editions, a series that’ll see the company team up with another person or group to create limited edition cases for Android phones. The first collaboration is now live, and the inaugural Edition partner is Skrillex.
Google is now offering the Skrillex Live Case, which is available in three different designs that are called Space Shield, Circuit Bae, and Lil Planet. There are cases that fit the Nexus 6, Nexus 5, Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung Galaxy S6, and Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Each case costs $40 and includes a special live wallpaper to extend the design from the case to the phone’s display. The live wallpaper isn’t any regular live wallpaper, though, because it will change throughout the day to show images of Earth captured from teh stratosphere. At night, it’ll change to display constellations that are viewable from your location.
Google and Skrillex used a custom balloon satellite named Nanou, which is also the name of Skrillex’s dog, to capture the images used for the live wallpaper. Once the balloon is done taking photos, one Skrillex fan will win the satellite complete with Skrillex’s autograph.
In addition to getting a case and live wallpaper, anyone that buys a special Skrillex case will get early access to a free OWSLA album on Google Play, as well as “Skrillex updates” sent directly to their phones. There’s also a button on the case that gives you quick access to Skrillex’s music on YouTube, but it can be customized to launch an app or go to a different site.
Google says that the Skrillex Live Case will be available through the end of June or while supplies last. There’s no word on who else is going to participate in the Editions program.
