HTC is typically pretty transparent when it comes to the progress of its Android updates, and the company is showing that again now by sharing some information on its Android 5.1 plans.
Responding to questions on Twitter, HTC’s Mo Versi has revealed some news regarding Android 5.1 and some of HTC’s products. Versi, who is HTC’s VP of Product Management, says that his company is currently targeting early April for its Android 5.1 push to the One M7 and One M8 Google Play edition devices.
That’s exciting news for HTC GPe device owners, but Versi also had some not-so-exciting news to share. The exec confirmed that only the Google Play edition One M7 will be updated to Android 5.1, meaning that owners of the Sense model won’t be getting the update. In response to a question regarding the HTC Advantage and its promise of updates for two years, Versi explained that HTC has updated the One M7 “for up to two years from an OS standpoint.”
Obviously it’s kind of a disappointment that the Sense-ified One M7 won’t be getting Android 5.1, especially since there are probably a lot of folks using the device as their daily driver. On the upside, though, it did get a major update to Android 5.0 Lollipop, and since many of HTC’s apps are now in Google Play, the device could still get some new HTC-specific goodies in the future.
