Virtual reality is all the rage nowadays. We’ve seen Facebook snap up Oculus VR, Google offer its Cardboard VR headset, and Samsung release its own Gear VR device. Now LG is getting in on the action too.
LG is teaming up with Google for its new “VR for G3” giveaway that’ll see LG G3 buyers get a free VR headset that works with Google Cardboard. The headset takes advantage of the G3’s Rear Key setup, meaning that it can use the phone’s 1W speaker. The VR for G3 headset also has a neodymium ring magnet on its side that works with the G3’s magnetic gyroscope sensor to let you scroll through menus and select apps without actually touching the display.
LG says that its VR for G3 promo will roll out “in select markets” in February. When it does launch, LG will offer a free VR game called Robobliteration for use with its headset.
It’s worth noting that LG’s VR headset isn’t really the company’s own offering. Instead, LG is utilizing the work that Google has already done on Cardboard and just making a slightly nicer version of it. That’s actually a nice move because it lets developers and users access all of the software that’s already available for Google Cardboard and also exposes any new users to the Cardboard offerings.
