Snapchat is typically thought of as a service for sharing ephemeral videos and messages, but today the company is branching out into more newsworthy content.
Snapchat Discover is a new feature that’ll show you Stories that are curated from editors and artists. The Stories will show full screen photos and videos, ads, and long form layouts, and the demo video shows content from major entities like CNN, Comedy Central, Food Network, ESPN, People, and National Geographic. Each edition is refreshed after 24 hours to ensure that the content you’re shown is fresh and up-to-date.
To access Snapchat Discover, you swipe over to the right in the Snapchat app. You’ll be greeted by channels from several different media companies. You can tap a channel to open it up, swipe up to scroll through that channel’s Snaps, then swipe up to view more information about a Snap. When you’re done, swipe down to return to the main Discover screen.
While Snapchat used to primarily be known for sharing photos that would quickly disappear, the company looks like it’s now making a play to become much more central to your everyday life. With Discover, Snapchat wants to become one of the main — if not the main — news source for its users, and with major brands like Comedy Central, ESPN, and People, Snapchat could indeed become the go-to news source for a lot of people.
