After leaking out earlier this month, the HTC RE camera is now officially official.
The HTC RE camera is a periscope-shaped device that includes a 16-megapixel camera with a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor and f/2.8 wide angle lens. When it comes to video capture, the RE camera can record 1080p video at 30 frames per second as well as 4x slow motion video.
HTC’s RE camera is IP57-rated, giving it waterproof capabilities, and it’s powered by an 820mAh battery that’s good for capturing around 1200 16-megapixel photos. Your images and video are stored on an 8GB microSD card that’s included, and the device can be upgraded to up to a 128GB card. Finally, the RE camera’s shutter button is located at the top of its neck, which ought to be easy to reach with your thumb. It’s also got a second button on the under side of its neck that can be used to capture slo-mo video. Finally, HTC says that it will be able to push updates to the RE in the future to upgrade its features.
HTC has crafted a RE app for smartphones that lets you control the device’s settings, share your images and video and also use the phone as a remote viewfinder. The HTC RE app is compatible with devices on Android 4.3 or higher, and HTC says that it plans to offer an iOS app as well. The HTC RE camera will connect to your phone over Bluetooth.
Photography has long been one feature that HTC has used to make its devices stand out from the pack, like with its UltraPixel sensor and Duo Camera setup on the HTC One (M8). The RE camera is a continuation of that effort, giving HTC a chance to leverage its camera capabilities in the action camera market, which is a bit less crowded than the smartphone market.
The HTC RE camera will launch "in time for the holidays" in white, teal, orange and navy blue — the last of which will be a Best Buy exclusiv — for $199.99. The RE camera is now available for preorder from HTC's dedicated website, and the company is also offering a number of mounts and clips for its new camera.
