Ready for a Tuesday mystery, mobile fans? Get on your deerstalker and grab your pipe, because that’s exactly what I’ve got for you today.
Engadget has discovered a new FCC listing for a Motorola phone that’s 73.33mm wide, 143.49mm tall and has a front that measures 154.49mm. The size of the device, the timing of its appearance in the FCC and the recent Nexus 6 rumors have led some to suggest that this mystery phone could be the Nexus 6, but that may not actually be the case.
While finding the exact size of the Motorola’s phone’s front in inches to determine its screen size, I stumbled upon a Droid-Life post that points toward an FCC entry for Verizon’s rumored DROID Turbo/Quark that might feature a 5.5-inch screen with capacitive navigation buttons. It turns out that that device has the exact same dimensions as today’s mystery Motorola phone.
The folks at Droid-Life noticed this, too, and goes on to suggest that the mystery Motorola phone could actually be an AT&T device because it’s got LTE bands 2/4/5/7/17 as well as WCDMA bands 2/4/5 support. That’s substantially less than the number of bands that the Nexus 5 supports, which includes LTE bands 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41 and WCDMA bands 1/2/4/5/6/8/19.
While there’s no definitive proof that today’s mystery Motorola phone isn’t the Nexus 6, it’s looking like that’s unlikely. Google’s Nexus phones are meant to be pretty GSM-friendly, and I don’t think that Google would drastically reduce the number of GSM and LTE frequencies supported by the Nexus 6 after including such wide support in the Nexus 5.
So what might this mystery Motorola phone be? Well, the fact that it’s the same size as the device thought to be Verizon’s DROID Turbo/Quark suggests that it could be a non-DROID AT&T variant of that device. AT&T did launch a line of Motorola-made Atrix phones back in the day, so there’s a chance that we could see something similar pop up later this year.
