We haven’t seen many major changes to Windows Phone or Nokia Lumia hardware since Microsoft completed its acquisition of Nokia’s Devices and Services division earlier this year, but a new leak suggests that that’ll change later this year.
Reports from Geek On Gadgets and The Verge say that Microsoft is planning to stop using the “Nokia” and “Windows Phone” branding on its devices this holiday season. Instead, Microsoft will simply use the “Lumia” branding for its hardware. Microsoft is also expected to refer to its mobile platform simply as “Windows” rather than “Windows Phone.”
While still unconfirmed, it wouldn’t surprise me if they do go down later this year. Most US wireless consumers are likely more familiar with the Microsoft and Lumia brands than they are Nokia, and as The Verge notes, we’ve seen Microsoft focus more on using Windows rather than Windows Phone in its advertising lately. For example, the new HTC One (M8) for Windows isn’t known as the “HTC One (M8) for Windows Phone.”
What do you think of this leak? Do you think it’d be a wise move for Microsoft?
