Last night, we learned that Verizon might begin applying its “Network Optimization” program to its customers with an unlimited data plan and 4G LTE device. It was a rumor at the time, but now Verizon has come forward and confirmed its plans.
Verizon says that starting in October, its Network Optimization effort will include customers that meet the following criteria:
Once you meet all four requirements, Verizon says that you “may” see your data speeds slowed when you’re using a data-hungry app and connected to a highly-trafficked cell site. When the heavy usage comes to an end or the customer moves to a different cell site, network speeds should return to normal. Verizon also says that the “vast majority” of its customers won’t be affected by its Network Optimization policy.
As I mentioned yesterday, it’s never good to see a carrier roll out a policy that slows the speeds of its users. I kind of agree with Verizon when it says that most of its subscribers won’t be affected by Network Optimization, though, as the criteria that you have to meet before being slowed are pretty specific.
