After passing the U.S. Senate earlier this month, a new cellphone unlocking bill made some more progress toward becoming a law today.
The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a bill that would making unlocking a cellphone legal once again. Now that it’s passed the House, the bill will make its way to the desk of President Barack Obama. Obama has already voiced his support for the bill, saying that he looks forward to signing it into law.
Unlocking a cellphone for use on carriers other than your existing one was made technically illegal early in 2013 when an exception to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act expired. It looks like that law will soon change, though, as Obama is likely to sign the bill into law once he’s given the opportunity. Exactly when that’ll happen is still unknown, but at least it we know that it won’t be long before wireless consumers are able to pop a SIM card into their device from someone other than their primary carrier without worry.
