There are a ton of major new features coming with Windows Phone 8.1, including the Cortana digital assistant, background Start screen images and a new customizable lockscreen app. That last feature isn’t one that’s available yet in the Windows Phone 8.1 Preview for Developers, but the good news for eager testers is that the feature will roll out soon.
Windows Phone head Joe Belfiore just announced that the beta version of the new Windows Phone 8.1 lockscreen app is “almost here,” adding that it’ll arrive in “perhaps a week.” Belfiore explains the delay in the feature’s rollout by saying that Microsoft ran into some issues and added an unnamed feature.
The new Windows Phone 8.1 lockscreen app will allow users to add themes to their device’s lockscreen, enabling new visuals and animations that include diagonal-sliding text. The app looks like it’ll be yet another way for Windows Phoners to customize their smartphone.
Belfiore says that the lockscreen app beta will be available in English and will be compatible with devices with 1GB of RAM or more. If you and your Windows Phone fit both of those criteria, then you should be able to give your device’s lockscreen a fresh new look in a week or so.
