Facebook has made some pretty big moves with its iOS apps this year, launching its new Paper app and announcing plans to drop Messenger support from its main app. Today the company made another big change to its iOS app roster, axing two specialized apps from the App Store.
Facebook has officially removed its Poke and Camera apps from Apple’s App Store. The company confirmed the removals to The Verge but declined to offer any explanation as to why the apps were yanked.
Both Poke and Camera debuted in 2012, but we never heard much about either app after their launches. While Facebook won’t explain why it’s pulled the apps, it likely has to do with other apps that are already available. For example, Poke and Snapchat both allow users to send messages that disappear after a set period of time. However, Snapchat has gained quite a bit more traction with consumers than Poke ever did. Then there’s Camera, which featured a batch photo upload feature that eventually made its way into the main Facebook app.
Considering how little we’ve heard about the Poke and Camera apps lately, it’s unlikely that too many folks will be upset about their removal. If you were a frequent user of either, though, it looks like it might be time to start using another app for your self-destruction messaging and Facebook photo upload needs.
