Foursquare has long enabled users to check in to locations and see where their friends are, and more recently it began pushing the discovery aspect of its service as well. Soon Foursquare users won’t be able to do all of that within the same app, though, because the company has announced that it’s splitting the Foursquare experience into two separate apps.

First up, Foursquare is prepping a new app called Swarm. This app will be where you go to check in to locations and see what your nearby friends are up to. Foursquare says that checking in with Swarm will be much faster and easier than it currently is with the Foursquare app. Swarm will launch on Android and iOS in the coming weeks, with a Windows Phone version to follow “soon after.”

As for the Foursquare app that millions of folks already have installed on their smartphone, it will become focused on discovery. The app will learn from the places you’ve been as well as reviews of local spots in order to suggest new restaurants and stores for you to visit. This new Foursquare app is expected to launch “later this summer.”

This split into two apps is an interesting move for Foursquare. The company says that it’s making the move because while users load up Foursquare to check in and find new places, they usually just do one of those things at a time. Splitting Foursquare into two apps could help make the separate check-in and discovery processes quicker.
