Yesterday I mentioned that now that the Galaxy S5 and One (M8) are now official, the rumor mill is likely to begin churning out iPhone 6 rumors at a more rapid pace. And wouldn't you know it, just a day after some leaked images claimed to show Apple's new handset in testing, a new report has surfaced with some purported details related to production of the iPhone 6's screens.

Supply chain sources speaking to Reuters say that mass production of the iPhone 6's screens could get underway at Japan Display as soon as May. The tipsters claim that 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays are planned for Apple's next iPhone, but that the 5.5-inch screen could be delayed due to issues with the in-cell touch panel technology and the larger display.

This in-cell tech will reportedly be used in both the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 models and will enable Apple to make the devices thinner than if it were to use regular touch panels. Because of the delay, it's said that production of the 5.5-inch screens may not start until "several months" after the 4.7 incher.

Rumors have long been swirling that 2014 is the year that Apple will introduce a new iPhone with a screen that's larger than the 4 incher that's present on the iPhone 5, 5s and 5c. While I've no doubt that Apple has iPhones of varying screen sizes kicking around in its labs, there's no guarantee that we'll actually see a larger iOS handset hit the market until Tim Cook announces one. Today's report claims that the next iPhone will be introduced this autumn, and given Apple's love for the annual refresh cycle, I wouldn't be surprised if that debut came in early September just like the past two iPhone announcements have.
