Microsoft is still remaining fairly tightlipped on when the Windows Phone 7.8 update for existing Windows Phone hardware will drop, but today the company did take a step to ensure that once the new software does start rolling out, there will be apps for users to download that take advantage of WP7.8's new features. On the Windows Phone Developer Blog, Microsoft has announced that it's releasing a Windows Phone software development kit update for Windows Phone 7.8, which will allow developers to update their apps to take advantage of the resizable Live Tiles that users will gain access to once updated to WP7.8. The updated SDK also includes new emulators for devs to see how their apps would run on WP7.8 hardware with either 256MB or 512MB of RAM.
While today's news may not be terribly exciting for end users, it's good for developers that want to get their apps ready for the impending (we hope) arrival of the Windows Phone 7.8 update. It also means that consumers should have some apps that take advantage of WP7.8's new Start screen and resizable Live Tiles once the update does hit, so long as the developers have updated the apps that are installed on those consumers' phones. Microsoft previously said that the Windows Phone 7.8 update would begin rolling out in early 2013, but since then the company has remained quiet on the subject.
