Nokia may have already used its PureView branding on a Windows Phone device to describe the Lumia 920's 8.7-megapixel camera, but according to a new report, the company is prepping a "true" PureView Windows Phone product for debut in 2013. Sources speaking to The Verge claim that Nokia is working on a Lumia smartphone codenamed "EOS" that will feature a sensor that's similar to the one found on Nokia's 41-megapixel 808 PureView. The device is also said to include an aluminum body and square edges. It's expected that AT&T will offer the handset in the U.S.

Introduced in early 2012, the 808 PureView features a 41-megapixel sensor that could take full-on 38-megapixel photos as well as 8-megapixel and 5-megapixel shots. The 8- or 5-megapixel images used Nokia's oversampling tech to take a single pixel and pack it full of information from the surrounding seven pixels to help produce sharper shots. The Symbian-powered 808 PureView never got an official carrier release in the U.S., though it did eventually hit Amazon in unlocked form.

As I noted before, the Lumia 920 came to market last year with its own PureView-branded camera. The thought of a PureView Windows Phone device got many people excited, especially since some were unwilling to pony up for an unlocked 808 PureView running an OS that's running an OS that Nokia doesn't exactly have a ton of future plans for. There was some disappointment felt when Nokia revealed that the 920's camera wouldn't have a sensor like the 808 PureView's, but it sounds like those people could soon get their wish with this Nokia EOS. It's not yet clear exactly when the EOS might launch, but for camera aficionados interested in Windows Phone, it may be one device that's worth waiting for.
