The supply of smartphones is never-ending. Hundreds of new phones are announced and released every year. On top of that, some get mid-cycle refreshes that may come in the form of a slight specification bump, a fix for any outstanding glitches or hardware quality issues. And sometimes, devices will get a color treatment just a few months in.

Until this year, the smartphone market has been mostly drab. Some phones come in alabaster edition. But the better portion of smartphones have always been either black or gunmetal.

Grays and black are great in that they're gender neutral and paint a more classy picture for professionals and business people. But let's be honest here. The typical white or black phone isn't suited for everyone, and white, gray and black can be boring. It's nice to add a splash of color from time to time. Fortunately for fans of color, several manufacturers are infusing their flagships with an array of lustrous, vibrant colors.

Nokia has always had a knack for vibrant colors. The N8 came in silver, black, orange, teal, lime green and pink. And the Finnish firm brought the popular cyan to AT&T with it's re-entry into the U.S. market Lumia 900. Now the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 are on the horizon with tons of vibrant hues in tow.

HTC has a penchant for colors, too. That said, colors have been much more subtle in HTC devices for more reasons than one. Devices like the DROID Incredible 2 came in a velvety red, and the HTC Rhyme came in teal and purple to appeal to a specific gender. But looking back, HTC has hidden its passion for colors beneath the drab blacks and gunmetals. The HD7, for example, had yellow accents around the camera and beneath the battery door in the international version. Some DROID Incredibles have red innards, like the original HTC EVO 4G. And the HTC Aria on AT&T had a bright yellow underbelly, too.

More recently, HTC has made its liking for color a little more known. The Windows Phone 8X and 8S bear bright paint jobs in colors such as: California Blue, Graphite Black, Flame Red, Limelight Yellow, Domino, Fiesta Red, Atlantic Blue and High-Rise Gray. And the 5-inch J Butterfly headed to Japan will come in a crimson red alongside the white and black models.

Samsung, too, has shown a fondness for less drastic colors in its popular, "inspired by nature" Galaxy S III line. AT&T carries a Garnet Red version along with the typical Marble White or Pebble Blue colors. Soon, Amber Brown and Sapphire Black models will make their way to Verizon alongside the typical colors, too. And somewhere floating around in space is a Titanium Gray variant.

Unfortunately, while some of the mentioned devices (and others painted nontraditional colors) may find their way across multiple carriers, not all the color variations carry over. This you can thank the carriers for. AT&T doesn't like crimson colors, which I suppose you can blame on its biggest rival. Likewise, Verizon isn't terribly fond of bright blues.

What that means is while manufacturers may want consumers to have as many color options as possible, carriers intervene and muck up those options in favor of their own bias. And not everyone is willing to switch carriers just for a specific device, much less for a specially colored device. Not to mention, some manufacturers – like Motorola – aren't keen on colors.

But that's not necessarily what I'm interested in. Instead, I want to know what you would choose given free reign of choice in device and color. If you could have any device in any color, what would it be? Would you keep a standard color in favor of a colored case? Or would you get crazy with color combinations?

Personally, I've always been a fan of white devices. But I wouldn't mind dabbling in colors for a change. If I could have any one phone in any color, I would probably choose the One X in red, solely on its design. Polycarbonate and bright red are a match made in heaven. Red has always been one of my favorite colors, so I wouldn't mind having a Note II or the iPhone 5 in crimson either.

More likely than not, though, I would probably get tired of any color choice. I get tired of black, just like I get tired of white. And I would likely get tired of red just as quick – as soon as another color option hit shelves.
