MetroPCS first launched its Voice over LTE (VoLTE) service in Dallas early last month, but it sounds like customers in the carrier's other LTE markets may have a bit of a wait ahead of them before they'll get to try out VoLTE. MetroPCS has said that it'll be another four to six months before it introduces VoLTE service in all of its 14 LTE markets, reports Fierce Wireless. "There are a number of changes that need to be made in base station optimization in Dallas," said MetroPCS CEO CEO Roger Linquist. The exec also dropped some good news, though, saying that MetroPCS plans to update its current roster of LTE smartphones with new features as Metro continues to improve its LTE service. "We think there's an opportunity for people to be assured that they won't have to discard their handset because there's a new technology coming in."

As for the market in which MetroPCS's VoLTE service is currently live, Linquist said that customers using VoLTE there are getting call quality that's better than the experience offered by Metro's CDMA network, which isn't exactly shocking but it still good to hear. That's why it's a bummer to hear that it'll take another four to six months for all of Metro's other LTE markets to get in on the VoLTE action. The wait will give MetroPCS more time to build out its lineup of VoLTE-compatible devices and customers will have more time to save up cash to pick one up, so at least there's that.
