At the Windows Phone 8 announcement in June, Microsoft confirmed that Samsung would be making hardware for the new smartphone operating system. Now some details on a couple of possible Samsung-made Windows Phone 8 devices have surfaced in the documents of the Apple v. Samsung trial that's set to kick off today. First up is the Odyssey, a handset that Samsung refers to as an "iconic smartphone." The Odyssey is said to feature a 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED display along with 8-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front cameras, NFC, 1.5GHz dual-core MSM8960 processor and HSPA+ 21/LTE connectivity.
The other device named in the leaked doc is dubbed the Marco. This device isn't quite as high-end as its Odyssey brother, featuring a 4-inch WVGA Super AMOLED display along with 5-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front cameras. However, the Marco does share some specs with the Odyssey, including a 1.5GHz dual-core MSM8960 processor and HSPA+ 21/LTE support. Both the Odyssey and Marco are said to be coming in Q4 2012.
Microsoft named several new features of Windows Phone 8 when it first announced the OS, but two of the more eye-catching additions were support for higher resolution displays and multi-core chipsets. It's good to see that Samsung may be prepping hardware that'll take advantage of these new parts of Windows Phone 8 right out of the gate. We're still missing a few crucial details of these two Samsung handsets, such as pricing and a more precise launch date, but at least folks looking forward to Windows Phone 8 are starting to get an idea of what they can expect to see out of the phones that'll be running Microsoft's new OS.
