Get ready for some more financial figures to be thrown your way, because Apple just announced its results for the third quarter of the fiscal 2012 year. The company has revealed that iPhone sales reached 26 million in the quarter, which is a growth of 28 percent compared to the year-earlier quarter. Meanwhile, sales of the iPad hit 17 million, an increase of 84 percent over the year-ago quarter. Apple also sold 10 million iPods, a year-over-year drop of 10 percent, and 4 million Macs, a 2 percent jump from the year-earlier quarter. Finally, the company confirmed that it'll be releasing OS X Mountain Lion tomorrow, July 25.
On the financial side of things, Apple's quarterly revenue for fiscal Q3 2012 hit $35 billion and its quarterly net profit finished at $8.8 billion. Those are both increases from Q2 2012, in which Apple posted revenue of $28.6 billion and net profit of $7.3 billion.
While Apple's iPhone sales for this quarter grew 28 percent year-over-year, the sales of the iPhone in fiscal Q3 2012 dropped around 9 million units from Q2 2012, a fact that's likely attributable to people waiting for the new iPhone that's expected to hit this fall. However, the iPad tried to make up for some of that drop by jumping from sales of 11.8 million in Q2 to 17 million in Q3. Apple will kick off a conference call to discuss its results at 5 p.m. Eastern, and we've already got the feed queued up and can hear the classical music playing. We'll update you if Tim Cook and Co. have any interesting pieces of information to share with us.
UPDATE: During its earnings call, Apple revealed that total iOS device sales (iPhone, iPad and iPod touch) is now over 410 million, with 45 million devices being sold in this quarter. The App Store is now home to more than 650,000 apps for those devices, 225,000 of which are designed specifically for the iPad. There are over 150 million iCloud users. Apple also reported that the iPhone is now available on 250 carriers in over 100 countries.
