No surprise here, but Verizon today finally confirmed that it will be making the move to tiered data plans effective July 7th, aka this Thursday. Existing customers with unlimited data will have their plan grandfathered in and will be able to keep said plan when upgrading to a new smartphone, Verizon spokesperson Brenda Raney said, but new customers will need to select one of the following options: $30/2GB, $50/5GB, or $80/10GB. There will also be a $10/75MB option available only to feature phone users, and any overages will cost $10 per GB regardless of which plan you're on. When it comes to tethering, Raney confirmed that subscribers with an unlimited data plan and an LTE smartphone will be given the option of signing up for unlimited 4G mobile hotspot use for $30 per month. New customers can sign up for a $20/2GB tethering plan.
Although we've known that Verizon would be introducing tiered data on the 7th for a couple of weeks now, it's always good to get all of the details straight from the horse's carrier's mouth. Now that we know for sure that the change will be taking place on Thursday, that gives anyone not on unlimited smartphone data two full days to get in on the all-you-can-eat fun before the buffet closes down.
