Verizon introduced a multitude of new devices at CES this week, many of them high-end and 4G-enabled, but apparently there was one thing that they felt needed its own event. Several members of the media have received a special, non-transferable invitation to a Verizon event next Tuesday at 11 AM EST in New York City. There's no indication as to what the focus of the event will be, but some sources close to Big Red have said that the Verizon iPhone will finally be announced.
Earlier this morning, we heard a rumor that Verizon's version of the iPhone could launch as soon as February 3rd, and this invite seems to support that. Then again, I've always said that when/if a Verizon iPhone finally arrives, you'd expect that Steve Jobs would be the one doing the announcing, not Verizon. Still, Verizon's top execs will be on hand at the event, and it's entirely possible that Jobs could make an appearance too. If the invite was sent out by Apple, it would almost certainly cause everyone to exclaim "Verizon iPhone!" or perhaps "iPad 2!," so maybe Verizon is hosting the event simply to keep us all guessing until Tuesday. It's definitely all still a mystery, so feel free to thrown in your guesses as to what the topic of Tuesday's event will be down in the comments.
UPDATE: The Wall Street Journal is reporting that, according to "a source familiar with the matter," the event on Tuesday will indeed be an announcement of the Verizon iPhone.
