While Windows Phone 7 has generally been pretty well-received so far, some users are lamenting the fact that some major features, like multitasking and copy/paste, are still missing from the OS.  Those features won't be missing much longer according to WP7 dev Chris Walsh, who says that Microsoft is planning a "massive" update for the OS that will launch in January.  Walsh, who contributed to the ChevronWP7 jailbreak, describes the update as being so major that Microsoft "could have called it Windows Phone 8."  Some of the new features will reportedly include: Bing turn-by-turn navigation, support for custom ringtones, copy/paste, and some form of multitasking.

This isn't the first time we've heard of a major update to Windows Phone 7 coming in January, although this new rumor claims that it will pack even more features than previously thought.  It's not surprising that Microsoft wants to get things like copy/paste and multitasking into their fledgling OS, but if they manage to include stuff like free voice-guided navigation, like Google has with Android, then WP7's chances at success increase even further.  How many of you would consider picking up a WP7 device if all of the rumored features make it into a January update?

UPDATE: Microsoft has chimed in to say that copy and paste will make its way to Windows Phone 7 users in "early 2011," with "additional updates delivered in the future."  That certainly sounds less exciting than the major update that Walsh promised, so let's hope that Microsoft is just keeping things close to the chest for now.
