Whenever a new version of the Android OS is released, users always want to know when their particular device will see the update. The recently released HTC EVO 4G has been the focus of speculation recently, with consumers wondering when Android 2.2 will come to their Sense-ified superphone. Today Sprint came out and told us when we can expect some Froyo, saying that they are finalizing work on the OS and that it will be available "in the near future." The carrier went on to say that it will be available as an upgrade on the EVO. The full statement can be read below.
"As work on finalizing the software is under way, Sprint expects to launch Android 2.2 in the near future. It also will be available as an upgrade on the recently launched HTC EVO 4G.
With the Android 2.2 upgrade, customers can expect improvements to include the following benefits: updates to user interface, improved EAS Support, improved browser performance, including Flash 10x Support, voice dialing over Bluetooth and application storage on external memory."
It's great that Sprint is nearly done working on Android 2.2 already. It sounds like they may be releasing the update to devices like the HTC Hero and Samsung Moment, as well, but it's unclear when, if ever, we'll actually see those updates. The EVO is Sprint's current flagship Android device, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's the first Sprint device running Froyo. It would be nice to hear something more concrete than "in the near future," but when it comes to Android OS updates, we'll take whatever news we can get.
UPDATE: It looks like the Sprint Hero and Moment will NOT be receiving the Android 2.2 upgrade.
