The list of Android devices running a version of the OS above 2.0 is growing steadily and now the GSM HTC Hero can be added to that list. HTC Taiwan announced that the Hero would be receiving the update starting today and it has indeed begun rolling out. While the company didn't say anything about upgrades outside of Asian markets, we're sure that other countries can't be far behind. Hopefully this will help push 2.1 devices into the majority and quiet the claims of fragmentation, at least for now. The GSM Hero, which was the first device to feature HTC's Sense UI on Android, has been stuck on Android 1.5 since its release in July 2009. It's obvious that an upgrade was long overdue and its nice to see that Hero users will finally get all of the features that phones like the Droid and Nexus One have been enjoying for quite some time. Even if the 2.1 update doesn't come for the rest of the world, at least we know that we'll start seeing it baked into ROMs fairly soon.
