Since launch, Apple Music has offered two subscription types: a $9.99 single subscription and a $14.99 family option. Now Apple is adding a third subscription option.
Apple Music is gaining a student subscription that’ll cost $4.99 per month in the US. It’ll also be available in the UK, Germany, Denmark, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, and in those countries the student membership will be 50 percent off the regular single subscription.
The Apple Music student subscription is available to anyone attending college, including those in Master’s programs, and Apple is working with UNiDAYS to confirm the those that sign up for a student sub are actually enrolled in college. The cheaper tier will be available to subscribers for up to four years.
Spotify offers its own $4.99 per month student subscription, and so it’s wise for Apple Music to launch a similar offer. Doing so makes Apple Music just as compelling as Spotify when it comes to pricing, and it gives Apple the opportunity to get students into its premium service at a discount and then lock them in for a regular subscription when they graduate.
