When the Google Glass Explorer program came to an end in January, some thought that Glass’s days may be numbered. Google executive chairman Eric Schimdt promises that that’s not the case.
Schmidt says that Google Glass is a “big and very fundamental platform for Google” and that El Goog doesn’t plan to end it. Instead, Schmidt told The Wall Street Journal that the wearable device is being “[made] ready for users” under the watch of Nest head Tony Fadell. Google has said that it plans to release a new version of Glass sometime in 2015.
The Explorer Edition of Google Glass never really gained much traction with consumers, likely due to factors like its $1500 price tag and concerns that wearers could take photos and video of others without permission. It’ll be interesting to see how Google plans to address Glass’s problems with its second iteration of the hardware, especially since the project includes Tony Fadell, who is referred to as one of the “fathers of the iPod” and who also created the Nest Learning Thermostat.
