We got some of the first details of Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 update last month thanks to some developer documentation. Those were all hardware-related, though, and so there may still be some software surprises in GDR2. One such surprise has been discovered in Barcelona.
While handling Microsoft’s new Lumia 640 at MWC 2015, Windows Central discovered that the device is running Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2, aka GDR2. The Settings app on the Lumia 640 looks a bit different than the one found in previous versions of WP81, sporting one long list of settings options that are divided into sections. The new GDR2 Settings app also lets you search for individual settings, control app permissions, and pin select settings to your Start screen.
Since Microsoft’s main focus right now is likely on Windows 10, it’s unlikely that there will be any major new features in the WP8.1 GDR2 update. We’ll probably see a handful of changes that make using the OS a bit easier, though, like the Settings changes found on the Lumia 640. For example, the ability to search for particular settings and pin them to the Start screen make finding and quickly accessing your frequently-used settings easy.
