One of the upgrades of the new iPhone 12 models is improved camera performance, including a main wide camera that lets in more light. And to celebrate, Apple today announced a major update for one of its camera-centric apps.
Clips is getting a major update to version 3.0 today. The upgrade brings a new, streamlined user interface that Apple says will give you faster access to all of the effects that Clips enables you to add to your videos. Apple is also increasing the amount of effects available to you, including eight new stickers, six more arrows and shapes, and 25 new soundtracks.
You're now able to record and create videos in multiple aspect ratios on Clips, including both vertical and horizontal videos. Clips on iPhone automatically launches in a 16:9 vertical format to make it easier for creating videos for social networks, but videos can be shared in any supported size using the new export options.
For owners of the new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, Clips is gaining support for HDR video capture. Now Clips users can record HDR video directly into their project and add HDR photos and videos from their Photos library. You can also choose to share your final video as a Dolby Vision HDR file.
Clips is improved on the iPad, too. The updated user interface for Clips on the iPad automatically opens to a new 4:3 landscape aspect ratio, which Apple says is the optimal size for full-size videos on the iPad.
The Clips app now features a large Effects browser and an easier-to-reach record button on the iPad, and you can utilize the new Scribble feature of iPadOS 14 to convert handwritten text from your Apple Pencil into typed text labels and posters. And when it's time to edit, Clips users can take advantage of a paired mouse or trackpad.
You can check out the new Clips app for yourself by downloading it from the App Store today.
