The PlayStation 5 is launching in just a couple weeks, and so today Sony is rolling out a totally refreshed PlayStation app to celebrate.
The new PlayStation app is now rolling out on Android and iOS. It brings with it a redesigned user interface that'll let you quickly see which of your friends are online, what they're playing, and chat with them over text and voice, including with groups of up to 15 friends.
Because text chat is included in this app, Sony says that it's retiring the dedicated PlayStation Messages app.
There are also some new features meant specifically for the PS5. With the app, you'll be able to remotely launch games, manage the storage on your PlayStation 5, and quickly sign into the PS5 from the app.
You can also use the PlayStation app to browse the new, native PS Store. From here you'll be able to buy new games and add-ons as well as remotely download them directly to your PS4 or PS5.
And finally, there's an Explore tab that'll give you official PlayStation news from game developers and Sony's own PS Blog.
This new PlayStation app looks like a big upgrade. The new UI has more personality and the ability to remotely launch games and manage storage on a PS5 will help you get set up for a game session on your phone so that when you get in front of your console, you can jump into the action more quickly. It's also nice to see messaging integrated into the PlayStation app rather than requiring an entirely separate app just for chatting with your PlayStation friends.
