We've seen some manufacturers avoid using a notch on their phones by using a pop-up camera mechanism for the front-facing shooter while others have used a secondary display on the back of the phone. Now Oppo and Xiaomi have come up with another way to ditch the notch.

Oppo and Xiaomi today shared videos of under-display camera tech. In a brief clip from Oppo, we can see the front camera of a device activated, and the person places their finger above the upper center portion of the display where the camera is located to prove that there's really a camera below that screen.

Xiaomi posted a short video of its own that also shows an under-display camera. We can see that the phone has no notch or hole-punch, and then the user is shown taking a selfie even though there's no visible camera.

Xiaomi Senior Vice President Wang Xiang has shed some light on just how his company's under-display camera works. The portion of the screen with the camera below it is made using a low-reflective glass with high transmittance. When the 20MP camera is activated, the display portion that's over the camera becomes transparent, letting light enter.

These demos from Oppo and Xiaomi are impressive, giving you an edge-to-edge display with no notch and no visible camera. That said, it's unclear when we might see a device with this under-display camera technology launch. Neither Oppo nor Xiaomi have announced any devices with this feature or given us a timeframe for when we might see it launch to the public. Xiaomi only says that it's "currently exploring the possibility of hiding the front-facing camera under the display." So for now we'll have to settle for watching the tech being shown off in these videos.
