The next big iOS update is nearly here.
Apple today unleashed the golden master updates for iOS 14.2 and iPadOS 14.2 to developers (via MacRumors). The golden master, or GM, update is the one that Apple deems ready for public consumption after weeks of beta testing.
There's no word yet on when iOS 14.2 and iPadOS 14.2 will be released to the public, but now that Apple has released the GM versions, a public launch is close.
If you've registered as a developer with Apple, you can get the iOS 14.2 or iPadOS 14.2 GM right now as an over-the-air update or through Apple's Developer Center on the web. Public testers in the Apple Beta Software Program are getting these GM updates today, too.
The update to iOS 14.2 brings with it both new features and fixes for bugs. There are more than 100 new emoji included in the release, including a ninja, bubble tea, a pinched fingers gesture, a tamale, anatomical heart and lungs, and many more.
Also included in iOS 14.2 is a new Shazam Music Recognition feature in Control Center. When enabled, you can open Control Center and tap the Shazam button to identify a song that's playing, including one that's currently playing on your phone. This gives you fast access to Shazam without having to open an app or summon Siri.
Speaking of Control Center, the update to iOS 14.2 also includes a redesigned Now Playing widget for Control Center that shows your recently played albums that you might want to jump back into if you don't have any music currently playing.
Apple is adding eight new wallpapers with iOS 14.2, including both light and dark mode versions. And there's a feature that'll help to optimize battery charging for AirPods by reducing the time that your AirPods spend fully charged, which will help to slow the rate of their battery aging.
